morning sun and shadows

i love that daylight savings has ended
and i have my mornings back!
i am 100% a morning person and its lovely to wake up early to sunlight
go out for a morning run,
and pretty much have a whole day before work

our room seems so peaceful in the morning light
i love watching the shadows form on the walls and the bed
something about it that puts me in the best mood

memories 4 by 4

i was excited to come home to some exciting post
i ordered some instagram pictures from postal pix last week
and i'm so shocked at how quickly they came
i can't wait to hang 'em up!
i'm thinking about getting some twine and clipping them up with wooden clothes pins
i'll post if i do
i need to remember to print pictures more often
facebook is great 'n' all for storing memories
but theres nothing like a little 4x4 memory to hang on the wall.

bbq date and famous furniture

last night taylor and i had a little bbq date after work
we were hoping to bbq monday night, but we both got home too late from work
taylor did most of the work.. the grilled portobello mushrooms and steak
i prepared and cooked the padron peppers
and molly ran around the two of us, not really helping at all, but being cute as usual
all of this fun stuff was from the sunday farmers market
padron pepper recipe (via leila):
coat peppers with coarse salt and pepper
drizzle with olive oil
saute in a skillet while stirring for about 5 minutes
(leila suggests using a cast iron skillet and baking for a few minutes, but unfortunately i don't have one!)

afterwards, we drove out to the hollywood hills for taylor to pick up his beloved, new, cassina authentic
yes my friends, he found one at a good price
and he's so excited about it
when he got home, he put it in our room (still figuring out where it will officially go),
poured a glass of scotch and relaxed in his button up shirt and boxers
this morning when we woke up i said, "hey tay, whats that thing on the other side of the room?"
he smiled a big grin and said in his italian accent, "ya know?"

this morning he was running late to work
and i caught him laying in it and staring out the window!
oh boys and their toys

new rug!

after contemplating whether this was worth it, i finally decided to buy this 2x3 rug for our front door from urban outfitters

i got it because taylor forgets either his keys, phone, or wallet at least twice a week.
i thought this was hilarious and came to the conclusion that it was no longer a want, but a necessity
hopefully he doesn't forget his stuff anymore!
should be here in a week.

and, shhhh don't tell taylor!

its hump day.

the salad turned out great!
it may not look exactly like the picture in the book, but it was just as good, i'm sure.

and that's right folks, those are our new painted walls in the background (+ our new beautiful walnut table!) more (better) pictures to come of our "work in progress" kitchen.
i must apologize for my recent photographs - they've all been from my iPhone. i've been very bad and haven't been taking my camera everywhere, but i will be sure to lug it around my neck this weekend.

yes, i already have the weekend on my mind.
1) i'm excited its a 3-day one!
2) facial this saturday with taylor's momma
3) reggae festival at UCLA on sunday

i'm sure there will be more fun planned as the weekend gets closer, but these 3 are reason enough to keep me excited!

HAPPY HUMP-DAY!

p.s. leave a comment or email me for the salad recipe if you're interested!

saturday wonders.

saturday taylor and i had a spontaneous day.
it was the first saturday in a long time i got to spend with him, since he has spent that last few working on the dining table.

we woke up early and bought paint from benjamin moore to paint the apartment. then we drove out to gardena on a whim for the h.d. buttercup "almost 100% off" warehouse sale, which turned out to be a bust.

by the time we got back to santa monica we were starving, and felt father's office would be the only cure.

so we ate... like really ate... like pigs

all of montana ave.'s shops were having a street sale. we barely made it across the street from father's office and taylor crashed on a couch.
our bellies were so full, but i couldn't stop laughing.
people were walking buy saying "gee, that couch looks really comfortable..."

after we drove back home to meet taylor's parents at our apartment
on the way back, we randomly found frank gehry's house. we got out and looked around...
i wondered off to a garage sale across the street and found this amazing chair

taylor and i decided we had to have it.... and so did everyone else.
taylor ran up the street to the atm to get cash while i stayed behind. there was a lot of tension over this chair, but we were the lucky winners.
$50!!! Go us!

its from 1961 and has travelled the world - it was a government chair, apparently.

i'm happy its ours. i will post more pictures soon to show how it looks in our new apartment.

we had many other adventures this weekend that will be up soon too, namely our painting disaster...

stay tuned, and happy monday!

continued quest.

my quest for an old library card catalog continues...

i still haven't found THE ONE. i check craigslist, ebay, google, and etsy daily. if you happen to find one please let me know.

i imagine all the fun things i can put in it, along with my "new, old" 1930s royal de luxe typewriter that would go ever so perfectly on the top.

::sigh::

dear future card catalog,

i still patiently await the day you sit in my cute little apartment.

love,
me.

lets eat!

taylor has just about finished our new dining table and i couldn't be more excited.

its a beautiful 6ft x 2.5ft piece of dark walnut with a steel metal base.

i'm absolutely in love and it fits wonderfully in our lovely kitchen.

he has about 4 more coats of oil to put on it and it should be good to go. we're thinking about getting 4 bertoia wire chairs, or perahps 2 and a bench?

i think taylor's stuff is pretty awesome. he not only designs everything, but he builds it all with his own 2 hands. i do get a some-what of a say in the design process... and i have to help carry stuff -_-

but in all, from the sketching stage to the finished product,
its all 100% taylor-made!

i'm really lucky to have such a handy-man. i think his next project in the works will be a credenza with a typewriter table attached for our living room

hope you all enjoy as much as i do! i can't wait 'til we get to sit down for our first meal. I think, too, i'm going to get a beautiful set of flowers to go in the center.

...happy monday!

something old, something new, something borrowed, something used.

vintage seems to be taking over barry!

the weekend was spent driving around looking at good ol' 1930-1950s treasures. i bought a typewriter yesterday and i'm in love! its 1930s quiet de luxe that i bought it from a lady in eagle rock who restores them (among other things) for a living. its beautiful and works like a charm; but believe it or not, our grandparents' closets proved to be the best place rummage..

it was a "vintage mom's day".. i spent the morning with my grandma going through her drawers and closets, and taylor spent the evening doing the same with his grandma. we lucked out with a lot of cool stuff - taylor, his grandfather's typewriter, an old chess set, me an old english, leather briefcase. we scavenged up some other gems like an brownie camera, a mason jar of shabby pens, some tattered books, and i brushed off some of my grandfather's flight logs from the war (courtesy of Linda-ma).

i'm really loving our new home. i was telling taylor last night, i feel more at home at our little apartment than i do at my parents' house in the valley. this is our life, and it's been damn fun so far.

taylor is continuing to build our furniture, so we still don't have much; a couch, a bed.. the basics. but hey! we got some cool vintage trinkets!

taylor said it best, "we have 2 typewriters, a brownie, but no chairs..."

happy monday, friends!

friday inspiration

this morning, on my morning blog search...

i saw this awesome old dewey decimal library card catalog cabinet and decided i NEED it.

believe it or not, i've actually thought about buying one in the past, but now that i have a new apt with taylor, now would be a perfect time

here are some pictures of the original inspiration...

Heres what i found on etsy.. i hope taylor likes it! i really want it

and it will be PERFECT for my new typewriter that i'm getting on sunday.

... now all i need is my vintage, red rotary phone and an old spinning globe.
